Description

Drawing of my friend and flatmate for next year, Stuart http://tiamet64.deviantart.com/ he has gorgeous hair. He's studying psychology, biology and philosophy at the moment, he doesn't grin like that very often 'cept around friends I guess. It was a good excuse to draw a guy, I'll probably be doing a bit more of that.

It's funny how indicative of personality looks and mannerisms can be, I had totally assumed he was a WoW player and either a science or philosophy major before I even knew his name.

2B mechanical pencil, kneaded eraser etc,about 23x21cm, 6-8 hours

Nice one. I really like the hair. :)

Amazing. It looks practically like a photograph. The bright areas of all white in his face I am sure are accurate but I think they are too bright. Perhaps a more subtle lighting for your model?

Excellent pencil work.

It's a photo, changed a bit with some filters. There's reflection of flashlight in his eyes, the detail you wouldn't ever draw in real conditions. His face is overexposed and too much lighted - the other detail you'd draw in other way. His hair is too detailed and realistic for pencil. Sorry, Cathy, I don't believe you.

nice render, but i agree with ratchather. your 2B pencil cant draw that dark tones like in the hair. i took 5 classes of drawing and i know what grades of pencils emit what tones. im really skeptical about this.

Could you give us an extreme close up of part of the hair. I don't want to play any kind of blame game here, because I know this can be done, but i feel like 6-8 hours is a bit impractical as well as just a 2b pencil. But I believe you until it is proven otherwise. So I am just going to say, fantastic drawing.

I believe this is a drawing. The dark black areas can be sketched with a 2b, and darkened in photoshop - I do that all the time with my sketches. :)
I'm curious on the technique you've used though. Did you use any form of a lightboard? I have tried placing the drawing over the photo reference, and they're a 98% match. Even the eyelashes!
(sorry if i sound suspicious... but... i kinda am :p ).

Well, I think you've already proved you can render with a pencil. :p It would be great to challenge yourself to go beyond what you already know you can do. Aside from adding a more conceptual angle, you could also try a full-figure piece or use a reference but radically change the lighting, making it more an investigation of form than direct replication. Just some thoughts. :)

Very nice work!

This is a pencil drawing:)

It's amazingly accurate, that's for sure.
I agree with chickenfingers that it would be nice to see you break out of your comfort zone.

You have proven to yourself and to us you are magnificant with these images.

Now...let's do a......landscape;)

"This is a pencil drawing"

No, it's not.

ratcatcher, anyone with half a brain can tell its a drawing. no filter can produce something like this. period. Although, I would say she needs to stop copying a photo as is and improve it, like removing the direct camera flash.

Very close to a photograph.
A few facial areas looks almost to bright as in overexposed if it would be a photograph.

Well done! :)

Some things do not add up. Why you would desire the darker areas in the hair is my question, regardless of how they came to be. I agree with those that say to step "outside" and draw what you feel as well as what you see.

Stunning work!
So realistic. It does look like a photo but I believe you it isn't, plus there are a few minor things that you can see is done with pencil :)

Wonderful work!
The only problem with this drawing is probably the ear, it looks alittle odd.
